Why Does My Dog Smell That?Dear Gwen, I have a 3 year old male retriever and I'm really puzzled about something. There's a section in your book, Manners for the Modern Dog describing how to keep a dog from chewing household items. Apparently the key to success depends on the dog's ultra keen sense of smell. If a dog's sense of smell is so great, why does my dog have to stick his nose directly in piles of other dog's excrement when even I can smell the stuff from 10 feet away? signed, Dear George, It's true that the dog's sense of smell is much better than ours. Some academics claim that
a dog can detect a drop of urine in a swimming pool full of water. When your dog sticks
his nose into something, he is "reading the fine print." We can't detect the 'details' because
our senses are overwhelmed. If you picked up a huge red vase to inspect a tiny, delicate
line of design on it, your dog might think, "What's with the human? Can't he see that the
vase is red from 100 yards away? Why is he holding it right up to his face?" He would be
further shocked if you pulled out a magnifying glass.
